Future Academies

In 2005, Lord Nash, along with his wife, Caroline, founded the charity Future with the aim of supporting less advantaged children and young people. In 2007, the couple approached the then-Labour Government to discuss the possibility of the charity supporting an academy school. This turned out to be possible, and Future Academies began working with Pimlico Academy, then in special measures, in 2008. Thanks to the dynamic new leadership team Future Academies recruited, the academy was ranked Outstanding by Ofsted less than two and a half years later.

Today, Future Academies supports 11 schools with around 7,000 students across London and Hertfordshire, including a new primary free school which the charity established. Its most recent success is Hammersmith’s Phoenix Academy. In special measures when Future Academies took it on, it has now received an Ofsted rating of Outstanding in all categories and is in the top 2% of secondary schools in the country by progress. The organisation also founded a SCITT teacher training facility, which is rated as one of the best in England, and runs a Curriculum Centre, which prepares teaching materials to assist teachers.

For Lord John Nash, extracurricular activities and careers support is of particular interest, and this is an area in which Future Academies is especially strong. For Lord Nash, it’s vital that young people are taken out of their regular environments and shown a wider world, with vast vistas of opportunity. Future Academies runs a vibrant programme of additional music, art, drama and sport provision, along with a range of residential trips and careers advice sessions.
